Recover (R.S.A)

RSA SHORTLISTED
BRIGHT IDEAS WINNER

In the village of Budikote India, there are drains that are full of dirty stagnant water due to animal waste and rubbish blocking them. They provide the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes that spread the debilitating chikungunya disease.

Recover is a lightweight garden bed overlay that covers the drains, yet still allows it to function as a water run off. It stops rubbish being thrown in and limits mosquito access to the water.

Materials used in construction are locally sourced cheap and sustainable, so they are easy to replace.

Marigold flowers are a natural insect repellent. They are resilient, easy to grow plants that require little water. They are also a high commodity in India, being used for religious festivals and essential oils. Harvesting and selling the flowers brings much needed economic prosperity to the area.

By gathering the seeds from the previous crop, the growth cycle becomes self sufficient.
